NORTH ENGLAND

A work trip took us to the area around Manchester.  We visited the Lake District, but the weather did not cooperate.  Luckily we were able to take some very nice walks in the Peak District National Park and visited historic Chester.

2013

LAKE COMO, ITALY

My wife’s 50th birthday brought us and close friends to spend several days in Varenna, on the shores of Lake Como.  We had been here in 2001, but poor weather diminished visibility greatly and shortened our stay.  This time, the weather cooperated.

2013

FLORENCE, ITALY

Florence was the last stop on the 50th extravaganza.  We stayed in a villa in the hills overlooking the city and had a week to explore.  It was hot and crowded in the city, but a lot of walking was required to work of the good food, wine and gelato.

GENOA, ITALY

We had one night to fill between Varenna and Florence and we choose Genoa.  We found a hotel across from the train station and went off to explore.  Too bad we only had one day.  The historic area is compact, steep, and full of narrow streets to explore.

2013

BERLIN, GERMANY

On our way to Italy, we had a day in Berlin.  We arrived early in the day and took a bus into the city center.  We spent about 6 hrs walking around, before we had to get back to catch our flight.  We came with no agenda and not knowing what to expect.

2013

VALENCIA, SPAIN

Valencia was home for the summer for our daughter while she attends university.  Our trip was to drop her off and get her situated.  The weather was wonderful as were the churros y chocolate.  If you go have lunch or dinner at  La Riuá.

BARCELONA ARCHITECTURE

The architecture in Barcelona, Spain is impressive and unique.  It is like no city I have ever visited.  It becomes very difficult to decide which pictures to show as there is so much to see and so many pictures were taken.

2012

BARCELONA EXPRESSION

Along with architecture, I was intrigued by the manners in which the people expressed themselves.  Graffiti, decorations on balconies, murals, signage, and statues where everywhere.

2012

BARCELONA PEOPLE

Barcelona is not the friendliest city in the world, yet we met some incredible people.  The streets are filled with people walking about, both tourist and locals.  People define the essence of a city as much as architecture and expression.

2012

BRUGGE, BELGIUM

We first visited Brugge in 2002 and had such a great time, we stayed an extra day.  In ten years it felt a bit more touristy and crowded than our last visit, but remains a beautiful medieval town with great food and chocolate.

2012

KEUKENHOF GARDENS, NE

We first visited these gardens in 2002.  They are only open 2 months each year.  Your timing determines what you see.  We were earlier in the season this year which diminished the amount of blooms on bushes and trees.  Nonetheless, spectacular.

2012

Our friend and hostess extraordinaire has introduced us to these quaint and beautiful Cornish seaside towns.  This trip we visited the north coast and  St. Ives.  The rain drove us in for lunch and  coffee but luckily, the sun was not to be kept away on this day.

ST. IVES, CORNWALL

2012

LONDON, ENGLAND

Our daughter spent most of her freshman year of college studying in London.  We’ve been in Heathrow many times, but have not spent much time in London.  We spent time getting her situated and familiar with her new surroundings.

2011

CORNWALL, ENGLAND

I was fortunate to reconnect with an old friend from high school who hosted us and was a fantastic tour guide.  Here are picture from some of the towns and seaside villages we visited.  We were lucky to have such great weather.  Thanks Roxy.

2011

EDEN PROJECT, CORNWALL

This visitor attraction is essentially a botanical garden.  The two huge dome enclosures emulate a tropical environment and a Mediterranean environment and house thousands of plant species.  The plants outside represent the temperate regions.

2011

LOOE, CORNWALL

Looe is a small coastal town and fishing port situated along the steep-sided valley of the River Looe.  The river divides Looe into East and West Looe and they are connected by a bridge.  Picturesque, quaint, and home to great pasties made for a great visit.

2011

CORK, IRELAND

Cork was home for two years.  As the second largest city in Ireland, it feels like a large city with an energetic and vital urban center, yet charming like a small town.  This was my first trip back in 10 years.  Much has changed, yet it remains so familiar.

2011

KINSALE, IRELAND

Kinsale is about a 40 min. drive south of Cork.  It is a picturesque seaside town with winding narrow streets, colorful store fronts, and a great place to bring visitors.  The Old Head of Kinsale is several miles beyond the town and offered great vistas.

2011

BEARA PENINSULA, IRELAND

The Beara peninsulas is in west Cork.  It is probably the least visited and populated of the three peninsulas in southwest Ireland.  It has a raw, rugid beauty.  You feel distance and time away from the world.

2011

DINGLE PENINSULA, IRELAND

Dingle is our favorite area in southwest Ireland.  Great B&Bs, beautiful scenery, Mulcahy pottery, and the Guinness always seems to taste better.

2011

RING OF KERRY, IRELAND

This is the most visited part of Co. Kerry.  Beginning in Killarney and circling the Iveragh Peninsula the ring road is well traveled.  Here you have the beauty of Killarney Nat’l Pk, steam mussels in Portmagee and the Gap of Dunloe.
